In Schlesinger v City of Mission Viejo, a judge ruled that three City of Mission Viejo Councilmembers received an unlawful extension to their terms and ordered their removal by September 30. The Councilmembers were originally elected to two-year terms in 2018 to facilitate a move to cumulative voting in 2020. After the Secretary of State objected, the City Council dropped the cumulative voting plan in favor of a 2022 move to district-based voting. The City may appeal the ruling.
